An open letter to Tom Hicks and George Gillett from Liverpool Pies

Mr Hicks and Mr Gillett,

It has been eight months since the custody of our club was passed into your hands and, though we would much rather have waited until a full, year-long term was completed before we assessed your performance, we here at Liverpool Pies feel that recent developments with regards to your ever-deteriorating relationship with Rafa Benitez mean such an assessment should be carried out immediately.

Upon receiving control of our club in March, we were publically promised in your many press conferences and interviews that the following four things would be carried out:

1) Investment in the playing squad, and the long-term future of our biggest stars to be secured.

2) That the development of a new, world-class stadium would be carried forward until completion.

3) That full support and co-opertion would be afforded to our manager, Rafa Benitez.

4) That in carrying the club forward, the long-standing traditions embedded in our club would be upheld as they are by the previous management, the current manager and players, and the match-going supporters.

Firstly, we are delighted at the considerable effort and expenditure that was carried out in securing future contracts for many of the club’s leading stars. We were grateful that the importance of players such as Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Pene Reina, and Xabi Alonso was recognised in the offering of new terms.

We were equally pleased at the extensive outlay made on bringing new players to the club. In particular, the capture of Fernando Torres, Yossi Benayoun and Ryan Babel showed a willingness and happiness to back Rafa Benitez not only in the transfer market as a whole, but also in securing his first-choice players – something that was sadly missing in his previous summer dealings.

However, further to the second point, we echo Rafa Benitez’s recent comments about the way transfer dealings operate in Europe. This is not, after all, an American sport, where the construction of a squad happens during the off-season, and the off-season only. Football, and in the Premier League in particular, is an ever-changing game, and those left behind in their transfer dealings are, more often than not, the same sides left behind in the race for silverware. Failing to strengthen in the areas we are lacking, and those that have, we are sure, been identified by Rafa Benitez, will only lead to us falling off the pace in the league title.

Furthermore, for all the summer outlay, we do not feel that it is right this be used as an excuse to avoid spending come January. The summer outlay of nearly £50 million must be offset by the over £20 million that we have recouped through the selling of players alone, not taking into account the wages saved through the release of some high-earning players.

On the point of the development of a new stadium, we can find no faults, and our thanks must be extended for the continued efforts in bringing a new, world-class stadium to our club. We must also offer our gratitude in the involvement of the fans in considering the importance of the Kop, and also in developing a suitable memorial to the Hillsborough disaster. While the elevated costs are of general concern, we are hopeful that this will not affect the future of the playing-side of the club.

However, we are deeply alarmed by the recent interaction with Rafa Benitez. This is a man who, on all previous occasions, you have back publicly. Mr Hicks, you yourself have said only recently that Rafa’s ability “should be unquestioned”, while on your arrival at our club described him as “a fresh thinker”, “a smart guy and great tactician”, and as “the man we want”.

Over the past week, though, we feel your treatment and lack of backing for Rafa has been wholly unacceptable. While Mr Benitez was probably wrong to air his grievances in public, we feel that your statement in response was nothing short of juvenile and undermining. We remind you that Mr Benitez has brought considerable success to this club – success that, at the time of his arrival, no Liverpool fan could have imagined. We remind you that the loyalty of Liverpool fans will continue to side with Mr Benitez, and that any attempts to undermine him to the club’s fans, players or the nation’s media will not be tolerated by us – the fans that weekly pump money into the club and your pockets. We remind you that, for all the work you have done over the past few months, the direct or indirect removal of Mr Benitez from his post will be met by supporter protest. We remind you that Liverpool is a club that supports its players and managers. We remind you that we will not be reduced to a joke by your public dealings. None of this is the Liverpool way.

We finally remind you that, regardless of the money, contracts or job titles, you are nothing more than guests at Liverpool Football Club. We remind you that this is our football club, not yours. We remind you that, while you have the power to remove Mr Benitez at your will, we ultimately have the power to remove you. We remind you that Liverpool Football Club is bigger than you.

Sincerely,
Liverpool Pies

Rafa has had more than enough money to build his squad.

The Reds are strong in every area. But our progess in europe is now in doubt.

If we don't progress, then LFC will lose £30m.

Rafa should focus on building a settled team, rather than getting even more players to tinker with.

i fully agree with your letter and i was shocked to hear that rafa benitez could be removed as liverpool manager.i think that now we have a very good squad with so many stars and international players with some very talented young players that 5 years ago would only dream of.the biggest insult to our beloved maneger is that mourinhio could replace him after the comments that he made towards LIVERPOOL FC.so mr gillett and mr hicks can you please let MR BENITEZ work the way he knows best.

rafa is right, hicks is arogant how can you run a football club by fax. he has no idea how liverpool fc should be run lets get one thing straight the fans are for rafa. we agree with him and if rafa walks you hicks and gillett , and parry should hang your heads in shame. better still sell and go back to what you know baseball. and usa soccer, we at l,pool will not stand by and watch you destroy are club.

Completely agree - it's a bit ludicrous to suggest that Rafa is anything but focused on coaching and training the team (a phrase destined to live on), almost to the point of obsession - if anything he needs to relax a bit more - can't see that happening though, thank robbie.

A truly fine letter and so fitting for this intolerable situation we all find ourselves faced with. Every comment you make is spot on.

I would only make one further point that you did not address in the letter. That is that Rafa Benitez has spent most of his time at LFC having to contend with a predominantly unfair and unsupportive and often hostile media. Whilst some of their criticism has clearly been justified, most has not. The same is the case with some within our own ranks of supporters who have been swayed at times by that media.

Thankfully however the vast majority of Liverpool fans have ensured Rafa Benitez has never walked alone through some of the torrents of criticism.

You would think the least his new 8 month young employers would do is not appear to go out of their way to undermine him publically even if they have some of their own misgivings concerning the man and his methods.

Perhaps we should get a "Keep Rafa" petition started and send it to Hicks and Gillette,I would definitely sign it as I am sure there would be many other Reds!

Thank you for expressing the views of what I am sure is felt by the majority of Liverpool supporters.
Hicks needs to understand the removal of Rafa will not be tolerated by the supporters.

He is absolutely responsible for our renewed successes as a footballing club, and if progress is to be maintained he must be allowed to continue.

I am also alarmed that you have chosen to strip him of his authority in the transfer market.
Undermining his transfer strategies is a dangerous game, as I'm sure you're aware of, (Aren't you?).
Do I also need to remind you we are still continually being outspent by both ManU and Chelsea in the transfer market. Just how exactly do you expect us to gain on these clubs?

The bottom line is we need Benitez more than he needs us, so if you cannot support him financially I suggest you sell the club to someone who can, then you take up a hobby more in line with your financial capacity.... Stamp collecting perhaps!!

I can see the owners and the manager's point of view. The owner's have set a time aside to discuss the buying power dispatched in the upcoming transfer market, they already put some sizeable funds in Rafa's lap in the summer and it is clear to gain ground some areas of the squad need to be expanded upon. I think it is fair to say many points in the premiership have been lost on more than one occasion... So in their defence I can see them trying to put a bit of pressure on Rafa - especially with a tricky match this week to get some results.
But I think Rafa's outbursts have been needlessly public but probably he felt it was needed to get his point across to his remote, new to the premiership owners. Mid December is too late to start these kinds of discussions but then some important Champion league matches will have been played out by then. What I cannot understand is why Parry has not played a bigger role in this? Surely he should know that Mid December is too late to be making these talks? Why has he not tried to bring the yanks over earlier? We can only assume Rafa has tried to get Parry to bring them over earlier hence then going public.

Totally agree with this. Rafa Benitez is the best manager we've had for a long time. Bringing Mourinho or any other manager would be a disaster. Moores made a huge mistake selling out to these two muppets, I predicted this when it happened now they are showing their tru colours, they have no idea how to run the club.

Liverpool fan for over 35 years.

Rafa is rubbish, it's time to go. Only success was with a team he didn't choose. He wastes and wastes money and then doesn't even play the right squad. He has become so stubborn the only way Liverpool can progress is if he goes. He doesn't deserve another dime until Liverpool win the league.

i agree w/ all that you have said but would also like people to remember that it is wrong to bad mouth us americans as some of us are just as passionate about this club as the rest of you.

Posted by: lfcusa | November 26, 2007 3:27 AM

100% agreement here. There seem to be some reports saying that transfer decisions have been taken out of Rafa`s hands and given to RICK FUCKING PARRY!!!!
This to me shows the lack of understanding of Liverpool by the Americans and is scarily reminiscent of Mourinho`s dealings with Abrahamovich. Understand this Hicks and Gillett. You know nothing about this game. Parry knows very little. Only what he`s told. Rafa is nigh on a genius and should be the ONLY person deciding who comes and who goes. No club has successfully implenented any kind of 2 tier system like this. Look at the mess at Tottenham, Chelsea, Madrid. This shows you what happens when you don`t support your manager.
Disgraceful.

In 3 years in charge, Rafa has brought us the FA Cup and the flippin' Champions League, not forgetting Athens too. We have been reasonable in the league. No more talk of UEFA Cups or League Cups - we have real ambition now.

Now, if we win our game in hand, we go second in the league - we are undefeated and if we get through the group stage in Europe, the shaky start will only serve us well come the knockouts.

Rafa can NEVER be sacked. Firstly, for his record and secondly because it's not the Liverpool way. We aren't fickle. Do we want to look like Chelsea - background trouble with owners trying to have too much fun? The fans make the decisions at Anfield...do not cross us, my American friends.

great letter. should be published in the echo.
what next, pom pom waving cheer leaders instead of "you`ll never walk alone" ???
no messrs hicks and gillett (no pun intended) you do not have the club at heart. you are business men who are probaly out to make a quick buck.
your only reason for wearing the scarf is because you bought the club. you dont wear it with any pride or passion. it may as well be any old rag hanging around your neck, as long as it brings the money in.

Posted by: ken | November 26, 2007 9:09 AM

Listen you silly American wankers, just give Rafa the money he needs. You will eventually recoup the investment and still be ahead financially. Then if there is any justice in this world, we will be bought by a true fan who won't try and fuck things up from day one as you both seem to have done or are still trying to do.
Obviously if Rafa gets his money and we are successful, we the supporters will see the second of your two faces when you both claim to have "been behind him all the way"!

Posted by: VancouverRed | November 27, 2007 1:26 AM

I love Rafa to death, but I don't see much wrong with the way Hicks and Gitlett are going forward. Let's face it, if we are out of the Champions League then addressing our depth at certain positions becomes less of a need. Rafa needs to focus on making sure we get to the next round and then I think the money will be there from the owners to allow Rafa to compete on multiple fronts. But if we get bounced out of the the CL the financial loss and reduced number of games will definitely impact our transfer activities.

It never ceases to amaze me as a Liverpudlian how offensive we can become, if you dont agree with anybody in this case Mr. H & Mr G the best we can do is abuse them but it is litte wonder that people from all over the globe think very little of us because thats what think of ourselves, well done Vancouver Red 27/11/07
I will take it that you couldnt sleep.

Look, y'all have to remember that Hicks is firts and foremost a private equity fund manager and not a dedicated sports team owner. Hicks buys teams so they can appreciate so that down the road he can sell them.

His Texas Rangers baseball team have sucked the big teat of mediocrity for years now. He has turned the Dallas Stars hockey club into a joke. He attempted to sell them about 4 years ago, but nobody would bite. He's a Texas yahoo, old fart money-manager with a good ol' boy ego the size of Wales. And he's a dirty player, too.

Rafa should get out while he still has his sanity.

Bobbi, from Dallas
