Debate: If Rafa goes, who would replace him?

benitez_facup_06.jpg

While the majority of Liverpool supporters are calling for Rafael Benitez's head, there is a minority asking: 'Who would be better?'

The phone-ins and forums are full of fans raging about Rafa, but few with a better solution.

So, all those people who've uttered the words 'Rafa's got to go' in the last 24 hours, just who would you bring in?

Jose Mourinho is one name being thrown about, but didn't we just spend the last five years hating the guy?

Then there's Marco van Basten, but he looks set to join Ajax after Euro 2008 - and I don't see what he's done to deserve the job anyway.

Gone too are the days when you can look down the league for a future Liverpool boss. The majority of Premier League managers are experts in survival but would be out of their depth if presented with a squad of world-class talent and thousands of expectant fans. Just ask Sam Allardyce.

Then you have to ask yourself if any of the managers at top European clubs would come to Liverpool, and, more importantly, come and work for Tom Hicks and George Gillett? Probably not.

That leaves us with those top bosses who are currently out of a job. And that brings us back to Mourinho doesn't it? Or, perhaps, Marcello Lippi.

So, if all the doomsdayers gets their way and Rafa goes, who do you think will be the next incumbent of the Anfield hotseat? And who would you want in an ideal world?

how about hansen? he always seems to know everything when asked!

Posted by: rowan | February 17, 2008 6:04 PM

Rafa to stay, don't think King Kenny could do any better @ the mo anyway.
In Rafa We Should Trust

Posted by: Chris B | February 17, 2008 6:28 PM

exactly. i think alan hansen would be a great manager. plus stop talking and do something. lets see if hes right about what he talks about

Posted by: nav | February 17, 2008 6:30 PM

At this point I'd be happy with any of the following:

King Kenny
Ian Rush
Hell, bring Roy Evans back
You could even dig up the bones of old Shankly

Posted by: Eric | February 17, 2008 6:32 PM

Stevie G or bones of old shankly^^ i think can do bether then rafa i can brove it on fifa 08

Mourhino is the man.Others who would do a far better job include van basten, lippi, redknapp.Benitez has had his chance and has blown it.

The expression 'fickle fans' does not even begin to describe some of these so called LFC fans. It was only a couple of weeks ago that a poll showed that over 90% of fans were supportive of Rafa. In the space of 3 weeks he seems to have lost all his skills and now the 'majority' want him out. Imagine what would have happened if Man U fans got rid of Ferguson in his first 5 years when he won nothing as opposed to winning the Champions League and FA Cup like Benitez? By the way even if we swallowed our pride and let that Mourinho in what is there to guarantee that he will stay for the long term. He is an egomaniac and will leave for the next big challenge once the owners, whoever they maybe, don't agree with him. Rafa can walk into any top club yet wants to make Liverpool his home. To all those calling for his head, just be careful with what you wish for because a certain bunch of fans from the North -East got their wish to rid their manager and are most likely wishing he was back. Give him at least another season with hopefully DIC the owners and some real cash for players and then if he is still has not performed then even I will join you to ask for his resignation. Sack him now, during a time when the club is in turmoil and we could be regretting it for years.

Yeah we hated Jose but we also admired him, he got Fat Frank to play football, he has experience in the Premier league at the top, he unsettled Red nose Fergie on more than one occasion.
The problem is, will the yanks bring someone like him in? Could they afford him? If the DIC rumours are true then sure they could. In my ideal world, Jose.
But as Liverpool fansite, isn't this thread a touch crass? If this was posted after a dismal performance on Tuesday I could really understand but instead at a time when we need to rally back behind the team?

Did you read the article Clayton? I tried to make it subtly clear that I'm asking those who've made a kneejerk reaction about booting out Rafa who they think could do a better job, and why? Because I'm not sure there is anyone. In fact, I've been trying to support Rafa in all my posts since 5pm yesterday. That was the intended tone. Apologies if it didn't come across that way.

I truly support rafa all the way ..but if we had to replace him it would have to be jose mourinho whether we like it or not his BRILLIANT, He can win us trophies

Personally, would love to see Lippi have the job. No disrespect to Rafa, he's a top class manager, but he just doesn't seem to be able to quite hack the premiership. How many more times do we have to point it out; rotation doesn't work in England! Plus on a number of occasions his substitutions have been awful, and as for man management, well, you just get the impression it's none existant.
Time for a change, which is just the way i felt after i watched him break the team the match after we thrashed Derby (we went from true title contenders to also rans, and havn't been able to get that earlier form back at all).

I strongly believe Rafa needs an Assistant to help & advice him on subs & line ups & training as well. I see that Rafa is blur on the subs & when to change the players.
Rafa must stay for 1 more season. He just brought in new & young players who are new to English football. This season is to get the players get to know the rotation system & English physical football. Next season - "All Systems Go".

Let's be honest, you'll keep complaining about your manager until you get one who wins you the Premiership. And that isn't going to happen for a long time indeed.

You should be content with a manager who gets you CL football every year. It's the best Liverpool could hope for, really.

Posted by: Chris | February 18, 2008 6:14 AM

I say,BRING BACK KENNY DALGLISH AS MANAGER!!!

Posted by: rahman | February 18, 2008 9:13 AM

Adam - Not having a dig at you per se just that I think the team need to rebuild quickly and I am not convinced with the timing it would help though I do agree with the blog content if you see what I mean?

Posted by: clayton | February 18, 2008 11:42 AM

We're cool Clayton. In a way I'm with you too. I think it's ridiculous people should want to replace him - I'm just trying to give those who do a forum to justify their view and suggest a better solution. Interestingly, I'm not convinced anyone's come up with one yet...

Everyone is jumping on Rafas back, but would you really want Jose in charge of our club. The guy is so annoying it is untrue, and spent a lot of money to do what he did at Chelsea, with which any top manager should be able to win the league if they have that sort of backing.
We have been going downhill since the yanks to charge, and the sooner they go home the better. They have killed the Lierpool spirit and gone public with internal matters that would have always been locked away.
Yes, Rafa rotates too much, we all know that, but if he was given a bit more backing to buy quality into the squad rather that second rate players, maybe this rotation would work.
Get the yanks out first then lets see what happens. Lets hope Stevie G steps up in the mean time and saves us again.

People are unbelievable, United had a bad season not so long ago as did Everton, did Fergie or Moyes go...no. The board placed trust in them and they have gone on from their. Rafa will get it right, it is a blip in an otherwise successful job, he has won the champions league, brought us to another final and with next to no transfer money compared to united and chelsea. Instant gratification is too slow for fans these days. Time was when liverpool always gave their managers backing, we sack Rafa after one poor season with all the turmoil that has gone on off the pitch, then we are no better than newcastle. People have to understand how difficult it is to win the league without the spending power of united and chelsea and without the time Wenger has had to groom his youth players. Rafa is working miracles with what he has.

The missing piece of the puzzle is Ayesteran, Prick Parry should be earning some of his guilt riddled salary by being mediator on Rafa's behalf and bringing back rafa's alter ego.

Posted by: Brozzo | February 18, 2008 6:14 PM

Mourhino-his is the one,
Kevin Kegan(like his attacking style of foot)
The current portugal coach (Just cant remember his name)

Posted by: Dush | February 19, 2008 4:10 PM

We are not just having a "poor season".we have been poor in the premier league since rafa took over.fact.
