£12million Liverpool target told he can leave

Gareth Barry, a reported target of Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, has been told he can leave Aston Villa if he sees his future elsewhere.

Club general Charles Krulak urged the England international to stay at Villa Park but said he would not stand in his way if he decided to leave.

These words may be encouraging to Benitez who was last week reported to have included Barry on a five-name wishlist of summer transfer targets. The 27-year-old has also attracted interest from Chelsea and Arsenal.

Krulak said:

"Obviously, we are keen to keep our captain - and we will do all in our power to keep him. But at the same time, he plays a huge part in this equation.

"At the end of the day, he needs to want to stay. The very worst thing we could do would be to try and hold onto a player who wants to leave.

"I hope that we can show him that his future is, in fact, at Aston Villa. We will work hard to do just that."

Will Barry choose to swap the Midlands for Merseyside? I think he just might.

At 27 his days certainly aren't numbered, but he may fancy a new challenge before it is too late. And the lure of a playing for a side regularly competing in the Champions League and the top four of the Premier League may prove strong enough for him to relinquish his role as Villa captain.

Furthermore, he's still very much on fringes of the England first XI and a move to a bigger club would almost certainly impress upon Fabio Capello.

What do YOU think? Will Barry take up Krulak's offer to walk away? If so, will Liverpool be his preferred destination? And would you be happy if he ended up at Anfield?

With Mascherano, Alsonso, Leiva and the up-and-coming Plessis already in the squad, do we really need another defensive midfielder? Didn't we sell Sissoko because we had enough cover there?

I think Barry is a great player, but I can't see where he'd fit in. Left winger? He's not attack-minded enough for the role Babel currently plays. Left back, maybe? When last did he play there?

Forget about barry, if there is one player at villa that could fit in at the 'pool, it's Young. What a season he's had. how about young on the left and babel on the right, crosses all day long for stevie & Nando. George, Eire

I think you'll find Alonso will be going back to spain at the end of the season hence why Rafa will go after Barry.

Barry can play any position across the middle. Rafa wants to have options to play the EPL way when not in the UCL.

This will make the Reds stronger against more physical teams like your Boltons and Blackburns of this world.

Barry deserves to be playing against the best midfield in Europe at his age now. Being such a great servant all these years to the Villa, he has deserved the move.

Throw in Crouch as a counterweight, O' Neill should have a decent team next season with Sidwell joining him from Chelski.
