Benitez confirms Liverpool's first summer signing - who is it?

benitez_17022008.jpg

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has confirmed that one player has already signed a deal to join the Anfield ranks in the summer.

A short and sweet statement posted on the official club website last month suggested this was the case. However, the Spaniard has now spoken to the press about the signing, who he insists will be a first-team player.

Benitez also confirmed that two young players are close to agreeing moves to Merseyside. He said:

"We are working on trying to improve the squad for next season.

"We have some movements for next season, so we will continue trying to do the same.

"We have some signings for the next season done. They are senior players for the first team and young players for the first team and reserve team.

"Two of them are really close, young players, and one senior player is done. He talks good English, but is not English."

An intriguing hint from Rafa at the end there, but you would have to be better than Sherlock Holmes to work it out. Of course, we're open to suggestions...

Thierry Henry maybe?

Posted by: Hedd Dafydd | April 21, 2008 2:27 PM

Robbie Keane!!!!

Posted by: Rian Omollo | April 21, 2008 2:40 PM

It's Gabriel Heinze. I saw the Real Madrid - Racing Santander match at the weekend, and the commentator mentioned how Heinze hadn't quite fit in at Real... Then it struck me, Rafa must have done a deal with them to pry him away from Man U the hard way.

For the deal to have been completed march/april would suggest the players is either in his last year and available on a free or he is from a league that has finished already ....

Posted by: reikirebel | April 21, 2008 2:54 PM

it cant be heinze - he only just signed for real this season.benitez has made it clear that this is a bosman signing i.e this guy's in his last year of contract,so i dont think its rafinha cos his contract lasts till 2011

Posted by: alectricity | April 21, 2008 4:56 PM

Its Klass-Jan Huntelaar.. as you know dutch people speak really good english .. we have been linked with him before and he has stated his desire to leave ajax .. benitez has previously said that he admires huntelaar and thinks he is a wonderful player benitez also said he needs another striker to compliment torres because gerrad is better in centre midfield and crouch is close to leaving and huntelaar said if he was to leave ajax he would go to england.. and although manchester united are linked with him he stated before on the skysports website that his favourite english team is liverpool as he watched them beat ac milan in 2005 champo league final and that he would love to join up with the reds at some stage in his career ! so my money is on liverpool buying huntelaar

Rafa has been looking for a right back for a while. Come in Rafinha (Brazillian) of Shalke 04.

Posted by: Kopred | April 21, 2008 7:33 PM

Well it definetely ain't Wayne Rooney - as he cant't speak English ha ha

Posted by: John | April 21, 2008 9:04 PM

Rafinha or "little Rafa" is the man, replacement for the ageing Finnan.

Posted by: Andrew | April 21, 2008 9:18 PM

Its Rafinha from Schalke. Benitez views him as a better right back than finnan or arbeloa. He is aggressive, attacking, good in the air and a very decent player.

Pity he will never match the quality of Gary Neville ( just put that in to wind up you scousers)

Follow follow follow cos United are going to Moscow

Rafa said he was not English but he didn't say he is not British. Broadens possibilities even more

Posted by: Frank | April 21, 2008 11:53 PM

i think rafinha , insua(as permanent signing) and trejo

Posted by: paul | April 22, 2008 12:08 AM

Does anyone else find it odd that with the central midfield talent pool held at Liverpool, Rafa is still looking to purchase more midfielders? Mark my words, Steven Gerrard WILL BE SOLD. I for one welcome this prospect, Stevie G is not compatible with Rafa's tactics, with him gone, everyone will play one position only and the squad will be that much more efficient. No more wandering or uncertainty. I believe once Stevie is sold, Liverpool will have a legitimate chance of winning the Premier League.

It's Pablo Aimar

I think it is Daniel Carvalho. He was rumoured to have signed for Inter but that deal fell through.
But does he speak english???

Posted by: Niraj Gomez | April 22, 2008 7:40 AM

I can't help but think with all this suspense building warm up that we do find out we are going to be bitterly disappointed to find out it is a new groundskeeper at Melwood or something.

Posted by: clayton | April 22, 2008 9:03 AM

I THINK ITS RONALDINHO
HIS FINISHING AT BARCELONA.
IMAGINE GERARD,EL NINO AND RONALDINHO

Posted by: cazzleigh mooloo | April 22, 2008 6:41 PM

Henry.

Posted by: jonskee | April 23, 2008 7:54 AM

If it's not Henry, then I think it might be Philipp Lahm; his contract is not being renewed at Bayern and most Germans speak very good English. I would certainly welcome this, our left side would be very strong with Lahm - Barry - Babel combining...
