Torres and Gerrard named in Premier League team of the season; El Nino loses out to Ronaldo in battle for Player of the Year

Liverpool stars Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres have been named in the Premier League team of the season.

The Reds captain and superstar striker joined the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Cesc Fabregas and ex-Liverpool keeper David James in the all-star XI.

Torres was also thought to be in with an outside chance of winning the PFA Player of the Year award after his sensational first season in English football. However, Ronaldo, the overwhelming favourite, took the crown for the second successive season. Next year Nando, next year.

There was joy for one of Torres' international team-mates though as Fabregas walked away with the Young Player of the Year trophy.

The team in full:

David James (Portsmouth)
Bacary Sagna (Arsenal)
Rio Ferdinand (Man Utd)
Nemanja Vidic (Man Utd)
Gael Clichy (Arsenal)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd)
Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal)
Ashley Young (Aston Villa)
Fernando Torres (Liverpool)
Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal)

I have to agree with the majority of the choices although, obviously, it would have been nice to see some more red men in there. Unfortunately - but rightly so - it seems our failure to mount a serious title challenge means the likes of Javier Mascherano, Jamie Carragher and Pepe Reina, who have all had excellent seasons, were always going to be overlooked.

What do YOU think? Do you agree with the choices? Or can you think of someone - Red or otherwise - who has been unfairly overlooked? And what about Torres missing out on Player of the Year? Should he have won?

As much as I hate him, you have to admire Ronaldo's form and he deserves the award.

However, if you consider that Torres does not take our penalty kicks (how many goals did ronaldo score from the spot?) and that Torres has not played nearly the minutes as Ronaldo because of Benitez early rotation - THEN you realize that Torres' season has been every bit as fantastic as Ronaldo's. The voting should have been much tighter.
