Is Dean Saunders the worst co-commentor ever?

Alright I know it's Liverpool tradition that you don't slag off players who used to star for the Reds but I have to ask you all this question. Is Deano the worst co-commentator in history or am I just making a bad call?

The former Welsh international striker scored 25 goals in 61 games for the Reds in the early 90s, but unfortunately, in my opinion at least, he's failed miserably to transfer his talent for putting the ball in the net to the gantry and microphone.

Apart from his numerous contradictions of himself, I remember two brilliant occasions in the Champions League qualifier last season in Toulouse when Deano boobed. Firstly, when an overhit cross came in from out wide and cleared Peter Crouch, Saunders came up with the following pearl: "If only he was taller." What, if only he was taller than 6 foot 7ins Deano?

Then, Sami Hyypia cut out a ball that was heading nowhere, and up popped Deano with: "I know that wasn't going to any of the opposition players, but that was class from Sami there." Yes Dean, class that. I think even I with my two left feet could have taken that pass.

So for those Reds fans who have managed to watch our pre-season games against Tranmere Rovers and Hertha Berlin (now) on Setanta, I want to know a) what you think of Deano's co-commentary and b) if there's anyone as bad as him out there past or present? Ah well, at least it's funny listening to him I suppose. Let us know your opinions below.

Are you the worst blogger ever?

I thought Dean Saunders was pretty good tonight. No Andy Gray but not bad.

Poor call indeed.

he really did my head in with his babbeling on about what each player should be doing, whats he done as a coach?

Saunders is the worst ever. He did say that Veronin was a great player didn't he ?

Absolutely. At one stage early in tonights game he was giving out saying our defenders should get the ball to the strikers straight away and play from there. He then goes on to contradict himself towards the end by saying Ronnie Moran would be saying keep passing, pass it quicker. One of the opposition will evetually not be able to get across and you can expose that to score. I think we should take the Ronnie way as the right way somehow.

I agree, Liverpool seem to be cursed with dodgy 'anaylists'. Nobody 'rotates' the knife into Liverpool more than the Sky lot though.

They have famously declared Rafa the luckiest man in football, and accused him of not playing (26 goals in 35 games) Fernando Torres enough last season. "Who knows how close you could of been otherwise Rafa" said Geoff Shreeves.

He is pretty new to the media end of things so give the bloke a chance. Its obvious by just listening to him that playing for us was the highlight of his career so I'd rather listen to someone like him than some fool who has an agenda against Rafa.

maybe if you'd ever played a decent level of footy you'd understand what he's saying....????

I don't know I had to laugh when he said if we looked under D for draw in the dictionary there would be a video of this game - and the last 5 mins there were a few good chances - would of been funnier if we scord though :)

I particularly enjoyed the pearl "somebody should have a quiet word with Voronin there and let him know that if you don't score 20 goals for Liverpool, you are out!" Ah yes of course, THAT is where Rafa is going wrong. Just have a quiet word! Brilliant.

Ha Ha I watched the game tonight and did think Denno your crap! But he did really want to say lets just fuck off the pub because this game is like watching paint dry, if he had I would have loved him! How crap is Leto??? Shocking i'm 38 think there still hope for me yet LOL

I think the funniest commentary in the game, and believe it was deano talking, was when he talked about gerrards groin problem, and how he was a bit stiff....cracked me up that one!

No didn't you heard Danny Mills?

Posted by: Yogi | July 23, 2008 12:45 AM

Didn't hear him but has no-one been subjected to the muck that Jim Beglin comes out with ?!

Posted by: pk | July 23, 2008 9:42 AM

Hahaha. Yeah he was absolutely shocking last night. I reckon David Pleat is the worst though.

No, couldn't disagree more - funniest commentator around and it appears to come naturally. Setanta really should think about using him for all their games.
