Legend says we need wingers - will we get them?

He's a legend of the club and when he speaks usually a lot of people listen. And now Match of the Day pundit Alan Hansen has said publicly what most fans have been saying for a long time, Liverpool FC need to sign wingers. Heighway, Callaghan, Johnston, Barnes. They were all great wingers in their day for the Reds. But will Rafa Benitez bow to public opinion? Who knows?

With the Spaniard apparently intent on signing Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry and Spurs forward Robbie Keane, can we even afford to buy any more players? It's doubtful, to say the least, with the coffers not exactly bulging thanks to our mounting debts (Yanks very much G&T).

Former Reds skipper Hansen, who lifted eight league titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups and three League Cups during his 14 years at Anfield, revealed at the launch of The New Football Pools his belief that Rafa needs to sign wide players if the Reds are to challenge for a long-overdue 19th title :

"They are getting closer but still need three or four players. Gareth Barry would be a great acquisition but really they need wide players, a couple of full-backs and wingers. The movement of United's frontline is phenomenal and they look like they can score goals from anywhere.

"Liverpool rely too heavily on the goals of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard. Take them out of the equation and I don't see too many goals coming from any other areas. If they go with the squad they already have, their 11 best players can compete. It's when you go deeper. Modern-day Premier League football is not about one team, it's about two. United and Chelsea can replace quality with quality but Liverpool can't.

"We won the championship in the 70s and 80s sometimes with great teams, sometimes with average teams. You can no longer do it with an average team, you have to be great to win the championship."

Do you agree with Jocky Hansen? Do Liverpool need wingers to challenge for the title? Or can we get away without signing anyone to play out wide?

We all want wingers but Rafa does things his own way, so if we trust him we have to believe he knows what he's doing

alonso is class, he pulls all the strings, we miss him more than gerrard when he is out. if the two new full backs are going to improve the width of the team like rafa claims why not keep alonso to capitalise in the middle??…. rafa is getting rid of him because of statistics, we conceded 16 goals from set pieces last year. he feels barry will help stem this. i think we should keep alonso and go all out for downing… he is improving massively year on year and will score and provide. he is also strong defensively

I think we already have two of the best upcoming wingers in Hammill and anderson.....they both have signed 3 million deals...and I think both have gone away for 6 months...when they come back I think we will have 2 lads who in my mind are as good as any young players out there!!

I agree with Hansen, Liverpool do need one or two decent wingers. Would help to take some of the pressure off Gerrard and Torres
