Should Rafa stop Mascherano going to the Olympics?

With Xabi Alonso's future at Anfield still under scrutiny despite Juventus' admission that they have completed their summer recruitment drive, and Lucas, Ryan Babel and Javier Mascherano having been called up by their respective countries, do you think Rafa Benitez should withdraw Monster Masch from the Argentina squad for the Beijing Olympics?

Although he only stands to miss two Premier League matches against Sunderland and Middlesbrough should Argentina reach the latter stages of the tournament, and with 'Tommy' being one of his country's over-age players, we want your verdict on whether Rafa should demand the popular midfielder puts club before country.

Not so very sure he should. I wonder what it would do for Javier's morale. though I really really really really hope he'll keep away from the blasted Olympics. Shame on you Argentina for trying to rob us.

There is little reason to allow Mascherano to go to China. He's over the age limit of 23, so it's not mandatory that he goes. And he'll miss the first few weeks of the season, including vital CL & Prem matches. On top of that, all the travel to/from China will take a toll on him and he'll need to be rested when he first gets back. And what if we were to lose Gerrard and/or Alonso to injury (and Barry isn't brought over), we could find ourselves short of quality central midfielders so early in the season!
Besides, I'm sure Argentina can find another defensive midfielder to send to China. We may not have too much of a choice with Lucas and Babel, but this is a no-brainer - keep him home!
