Do you consider Manchester United bigger rivals than Everton?

anfieldcrowdfivetimes.jpg

It's the million-dollar question that again is in the limelight with back-to-back encounters with our two biggest rivals.

With Everton's general rubbishness over the past ten years, it's possible to argue that, purely out of competition, United overtook our bitter neighbours in the must-beat stakes. Especially when three points against Everton were almost a given for so many years.

Response: Would any Man United players make it into the Liverpool team?

manunited_squad.jpg

Yesterday, our lovely sister site Manunitedpies.com ran a post asking their readers to suggest which Liverpool players would make it into the Manchester United squad.

Their article came to the conclusion that Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres would 'stand a chance', while most of our other players wouldn't be good enough to 'make it onto the United bench.'

It sparked quite a response - not least from Liverpool supporters - with everyone ranting and raging in defence of their team. Well, here's our comeback.

You have to be honest, a summer swap deal of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez for Dirky and Jermaine Pennant wouldn't do our title aspirations any harm, but look around the rest of the team and I'm content we've got the players to match.

I'd take Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso and Gerrard over Michael Carrick (or Owen Hargreaves), Paul Scholes and Anderson any day. Ryan Babel and Nani are two young players with equally bright futures, and, as great a player as he has been, you would take both over Ryan Giggs in the bigger scheme of things.

You're Benitez: How would you line up against Man Utd?

youre_benitez.jpg

Liverpool travel to Old Trafford on Sunday for one of the most eagerly anticipated encounters with Manchester United in years.

United know victory would be a giant step towards securing the 17th title that would put them just one behind the Reds in the record books. However, Liverpool are the form team in the league and with fourth spot and that all-important record to play for, we can expect far more drama than was seen at Anfield earlier in the season.

For it is true that United versus Liverpool is a fixture which has flattered to deceive in recent times. United supporters probably wouldn't agree as they have sampled glory in most of them, but take a back seat alongside the neutrals and the matches have been far from memorable.

United may not have had it all so easy if Liverpool had not lacked a killer edge in front of goal. Time and again the Reds have enjoyed dominant spells against Sir Alex Ferguson's side, only to be punished for not making them count (John O'Shea anyone). With Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard firing on all cylinders that shouldn't be a problem this time around.

So here's the question. With fourth place still hanging in the balance, how would you line up at Old Trafford on Sunday?

Put your mind at rest: Predict where will Liverpool finish

rafa_moyes_oneill.jpg

Welcome to the Liverpool Pies Fourth Place Predictor.

The concept is fairly simple. Below are all Liverpool's remaining fixtures, as well as Everton's and Aston Villa's, and we've had a go at guessing how the Premier League table will end up reading come May.

We may have been a little optimistic but our original results, which can still be seen below, suggested Liverpool would walk it, with Martin O'Neill's Villa just nudging the Toffees into fifth.

It's been so far so good for Liverpool after we correctly predicted wins over West Ham, Newcastle and Reading, but Villa's draw against Middlesbrough and defeat at Portsmouth means our predictions for the remaining games would now put Everton one point above the Midlanders come the end of the campaign.

To make your predictions all you have to do is copy and paste our answers into a comment box, replace our forecasted results with your own and then do the simple maths. We've even given you each team's respective goal difference just in case that's what it comes down to.

It's only a bit of fun so why not give it a go? If nothing else it could put your mind at rest.

Then again, it could have you crying into your cereal...

If there was a Premier League Royal Rumble who would win?

wwe.jpg

With no decent football on television yesterday my chums and I found ourselves debating the following question:

If there was a Premier League Royal Rumble, WWE style, who would win?

The first names on our list were William Gallas and Emmanuel Pogatetz - almost certainly a result of that mo-hawk and the fact Arsenal Middlesbrough were playing on the box in the corner.

As we dug deeper though the list expanded at some rate. Half the Portsmouth squad made it in, although there was little doubting that Papa Bouba Diop would be the ring leader.

Papa and co were soon joined by the likes of Robbie Savage (a battler), Richard Dunne (agressive pest), Christopher Samba (man mountain), El Hadji Diouf (streetwise spitter) and Darren Moore (the proverbial brick shithouse), while Roy Keane was deemed to be the representive of the managers. Him or Roy Hodgson.

It was also decided that Liverpool's current squad would not stand much of a chance.

As much as I now adore him, Nando would be first out of the ring, quickly followed by Dirk Kuyt and Yossi Benayoun.

Ryan Babel and Jermaine Pennant seem streetwise enough to survive a few rounds, and, of course, Javier Mascherano would cause havoc until being hoisted up and thrown away by Samba and Moore in the latter stages.

The route to the final has been mapped, but will Liverpool be there?

redsquare_moscow.jpg

Arsenal in the quarter finals, Chelsea or Fenerbahce in the semis. The route looks tough.

But that is what Liverpool must overcome if they are to make it to Moscow and a third European Cup final in four years.

Before I get carried away and make the boldest of bold predictions let's look at the immediate task - Arsenal.

As the fixture list stands Liverpool will face Everton on the weekend of March 30, Arsenal on April 2, Arsenal again in the Premier League on April 5, and then the second leg against the Gunners on April 8. And that's not to mention Manchester United on March 23. Some run of games, isn't it?

Now if I had my optimistic hat on I'd say we'd win them all. On our day, we are capable. If I had my pessimistic hat on I'd say our season could crumble like a burnt Aunt Bessies. But if I had my realistic hat on I'd say a slip up is inevitable.

Obviously that won't be easy to stomach as losing to any of those three clubs hurts. But winning five games on the trot against opposition of that calibre may be too much to ask.

Is it about time Rafa Benitez decided that it's either fourth place or the Champions League final?

80201313.jpg

With four English teams strolling into the Champions League quarter finals, it's easy to forget the struggles that the domestic league poses.

That's why, this week, I was rather struck by Gary Megson's omission that Bolton's weekend Premiership ties are more important than progression in the Uefa Cup.

Now, we're obviously a world away from the relegation fears that hang over Megson's Bolton head, but it got me thinking that perhaps the sentiment remains the same: should we say bollocks to the league and throw everything at Moscow, or should we cement Champions League football next year and let Europe bring whatever Europe brings?
