God heading back to the big time?

Reds' legend Robbie Fowler could be set for one last shot at the big time, after joining up with Blackburn Rovers on their pre-season trip to Germany in an effort to win a contract at the Lancashire club.

Fowler, who scored six goals in 16 appearances last time out during an injury riddled campaign playing in the Championship for Cardiff City, could win himself a contract for next season if he impresses his former team-mate at Liverpool, Paul Ince, who recently took over as Rovers' new manager.

Fowler had seemed set to finish his playing career in the second tier of English football after being offered a new contract to stay in the Welsh capital. But, after hearing of Ince's interest, Fowler's long-time agent George Scott told the South Wales Echo that his client's offer to join Rovers' on their pre-season tour was "too good an opportunity to turn down."

Cup Final heartache for 'God'

fowler_god.jpg

Robbie Fowler's dreams of playing in his third FA Cup Final were dashed earlier today when fellow Scouser and Cardiff City manager Dave Jones left him out of his final 16 for the match against Portsmouth at Wembley after initially including him in the 18 to travel to the English capital.

Having experienced the highs and lows of English football's greatest domestic showpiece during his career, 'God' had put himself in contention for a place in the Bluebirds' squad after overcoming a hip injury which had kept him out since the turn of the new year.

But, having trained for the week leading up to the final, Fowler's hopes of collecting a second winners' medal after helping the Reds to a memorable 2-1 triumph over Arsenal in 2001, were ended when Jones decided not to take a risk on the former Liverpool goal machine.

What do you make of Dave Jones' decision to leave Fowler out of the squad? Would you have included him on the bench at least?

Ronnie Whelan: "Sack Rafa"

Getty Images - Whelan.jpg

In Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan's opinion, Rafa Benitez is NOT the right man to take the club forward and guide us to our long-awaited 19th league championship.

And wait for it, the man he wants to see take the top job at Anfield is none other than the 'ever-popular on Merseyside' Portuguese manager, Jose Mourinho. Hmmm, with my index finger raised to my lips, I say Ronnie shhhhhhhh.

The ex-Republic of Ireland international who played for the Reds from 1981 until 1994 believes the fact that Rafa has not delivered a trophy this season signifies a time for change. Really Ron?

O'Neill tells ex-Red to Berger off

berger_patrik_av.jpg

Patrik Berger has been told he has no future at Aston Villa after urging midfielder Gareth Barry to jump ship and join Liverpool.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill has made holding onto Barry his main objective for the summer but Berger did him no favours by publicly describing a move to Anfield as a "once in a lifetime" opportunity.

"I was really disappointed and surprised that Patrik, with all his experience of dealing with the press, would make such an inappropriate comment," said a less than impressed O'Neill.

"The sad aspect of it is that we are paying Patrik's wages for him to recommend one of our players to another football club. It's ludicrous.

"I think Pat realises that now and he's apologised. He said the didn't mean a great deal of harm but the harm's been done and he won't be playing any part in proceedings from here on in."

God set to grace FA Cup final? Fowler given 10 days to prove his fitness

fowler_god.jpg

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler could be set for a role in the FA Cup final after Cardiff City boss Dave Jones admitted he will give the long-term injury absentee a chance to prove his fitness before the Wembley showdown with Portsmouth on May 17.

Fowler has scored six goals in 16 appearances for the Bluebirds since moving to South Wales last summer but has been missing for the past four months thanks to a series of knee and hip problems.

The man the Kop called 'God' could get a chance to make it up to the City faithful however, if he can prove he's up to it.

Jones said:

"We can give him 10 days of solid hard training which he needs and I'll make a decision on it.

"We've got an opportunity to really wire into him and test the hip and see if it stands up to it. If it does, fantastic - we have a player who can score goals for us."

Fowler made 369 appearances in two spells at Anfield, scoring 183 goals.

Paddy tells Barry to make Anfield switch

barry_gareth_08.jpg

Former Liverpool favourite Patrik Berger has told his Aston Villa team-mate Gareth Barry that a move to Liverpool is "the opportunity of a lifetime".

The Czech midfielder, who scored 35 goals in 196 appearances for the Reds, was responding to rumours that Rafael Benitez last week made a £14million cash-plus-player bid for Villa captain Barry.

Berger said:

"If I was in Gareth's position I would go there tomorrow. It is the opportunity of a lifetime. Liverpool don't come after you every year.

"He is the heart of our team and it would be a massive challenge for him. He would be in the Champions League and challenging to win trophies every year.

"I'm not surprised they want to sign him. He has had a fantastic season and was our main player from the beginning to the end. He has played well for the national team as well."

Thanks Paddy. Still red at heart. Good lad.
