Agger out for the season, but does Skrtel soften the blow?

agger_dan_22022008.jpg

Daniel Agger is set to miss the rest of the season as he will again undergo surgery on his troublesome metatarsal.

The injury has kept the Danish defender on the sidelines since September, but he was thought to be approaching a comeback after appearances for the reserves.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez explained the situation and, although disappointed, the Spaniard pointed to a six foot four inch Slovakian reason to be optimistic.

"It's a blow for Daniel but we want to get his problem sorted," said Benitez.

"We have defensive cover and Martin Skrtel is playing very well. Daniel will be back for next season."

Skrtel's form since his £6million move from Zenit St Petersburg in January has to inspire confidence. He'll be the first to admit he looked shaky on his debut against Havant and Waterlooville, but he has grown in stature with every game since.

Fernando Torres' Liverpool goals - Video compilation

Following his wonderstrike against Inter Milan on Tuesday, Fernando Torres' first season as a Liverpool player has now seen 26 goals in just 35 appearances.

Worth the £21 million price tag? Every penny, pound and Euro he was.

This video uploaded by wlxfu is a few weeks old so it only shows the Spaniard's first 17 - but it's well worth a watch. If nothing else it will make you realise how classy the majority of his goals have been.

Sit back, enjoy and relish the thought of what Arsenal are up against.

Another defeat for Hobbs while Le Tallec admits his big mistake

hobbs_jack_04032008.jpg

It was another depressing weekend for Liverpool's two Championship loanees.

Jack Hobbs' Scunthorpe look destined for League One after losing at Hull, while Adam Hammill was once again an unused substitute for Southampton.

Hobbs, who has been a regular starter for Iron since joining the club in January, was once again given a full 90 minutes, but could do little to prevent a 2-0 defeat. Nigel Adkins' side are now six points adrift of safety with only 10 games remaining.

Hammill, who was a regular under George Burley has been relegated to the bench by new boss Nigel Pearson and again had to settle for the role of onlooker as Saints drew 2-2 at Blackpool.

The 2003 FA Cup finalists could too find themselves in the drop zone before long. Just three points seperate them and 22nd-place Sheffield Wednesday, who have two games in hand.

Across the Channel, Anthony Le Tallec was introduced as a 75th-minute subsitute but could not help break the deadlock as Le Mans were held to a goalless draw at Nice. I flew to Nice on the way to Marseille in December you know. It seemed, well, nice.

Liverpool 3-0 Newcastle United: Have your say

torres_nu_h.jpg

The excellent run continues.

Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard were the heroes once again as Liverpool heaped more misery of Kevin Keegan's Newcastle with a 3-0 win at Anfield this afternoon.

Last week we said on this very website that the Reds were facing a crunch 10 days in their season. Since then they have seen off Bolton 3-1 in their own backyard, humiliated the Hammers in front of the Kop, and now completed the double over Newcastle. The fourth and final stop is the San Siro on Tuesday.

Jermaine Pennant set the ball rolling on 43 minutes in bizarre fashion. Jose Enrique's cross looped off the right winger and past the stranded Steve Harper.

Two minutes later Torres stepped forward to make it 2-0, and 25 goals for the season. The Spanish ace raced on to a pass from Steven Gerrard before calmly slotting home.

Then, when Torres returned the favour on 51 minutes Gerrard achieved a similar result to make the game safe, and condemn Keegan to an eighth game without a win since returning to the Newcastle helm.

Obafemi Martins hit the crossbar from 40 yards in the dying minutes but it was a rare spark from the Geordies, whose Premier League candle is now in further danger of going out.

What did you make of the game? Can you find any fault in our recent form? Rafa rotated today but do you think there will be any mention of it in the press?

And what about the Gerrard and Torres partnership? Time for Rooney and Ronaldo to step aside me thinks.

Roll on Tuesday.

Vote: Who was Liverpool's Man of the Match against West Ham? Torres handicap

For the second time in three games Fernando Torres has gone and spoilt this one.

As good as it is having a super striker in red hot form, it's just not fair on the others.

So, here's the deal. While the offal and others are getting thousands upon thousands of votes for El Nino we're just going to pay out from the start, strip him from the poll and leave you to vote for last night's unsung heroes.

Javier Mascherano had the West Ham fans wondering what could have been. Martin Skrtel again looked solid. Jamie Carragher had a lifetimes worth of chances. And, of course, Stevie G did what he does best.

But who was the best player not called Torres? In the words of that Geordie bloke from Big Brother, you decide...
