Vote: Who was Man of the Match against Arsenal?

Recovered yet?

No, me neither. What a night.

But who was the hero of the occasion? It's a tough call.

Stevie G said afterwards it was his worst ever game for the club - but forget William 'Mr T' Gallas, Gerrard was the one with the nuts when faced with that penalty.

Fernando Torres scored arguably his best goal for the club to date, and served as a threat and a target throughout. As did Peter Crouch alongside him, who flicked on the ball for El Nino's strike.

In midfield, Javier Mascherano was as solid and dependable as ever, while Ryan Babel's contribution from the bench was instrumental in sending us through.

But perhaps the best of the lot was Sami Hyypia. He scored the goal that gave us hope after a shocking first 30 minutes. And, although we conceded twice, the big Finn worked tirelessly alongside the also impressive Martin Skrtel to keep us in the game at crucial times.

Who for you was the best though? Vote now below.

Damien Plessis voted Man of the Match

plessis_arsenal.jpg

Damien Plessis has won our Man of the Match poll after his stunning debut against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Strolling around at the Gunners' new(ish) home in a style remincent of Patrick Vieira, the youngster looked as though he had been a fixture in Liverpool's midfield for years.

The young Frenchman's composure and vast array of passing did not go unnoticed by our readers and he received an impressive 28 per cent of the votes cast.

There has also been a gushing of praise after we asked you to assess his performance (to read and add to the comments click here).

Second in the poll with 25 per cent of the vote was the goalscorer Peter Crouch. The beanpole striker will undoubtedly be pleased to see the supporters showing faith after Rafael Benitez insisted he wants the England international to stay.

Finally, Fernando Torres somehow scraped third despite only playing ten minutes. Favouritism or what!?!

Vote: Who was Man of the Match against Arsenal?

Part two of Liverpool's triple header with Arsenal ended in a 1-1 draw on Saturday - the second time the Reds have held the Gunners at Emirates in a week.

However, unlike Wednesday's Champions League first leg it was Rafael Benitez's side who took the lead. Peter Crouch was the goalscoring hero of a makeshift team, excellently steering the ball past Manuel Almunia on the stroke of half time.

Unfortunately, Nicklas Bendtner had to go and ruin things with an equaliser after the break but, hey, let's not be downhearted. They haven't beaten us in two attempts and that sets things up nicely for the most crucial game of all, at Anfield on Wednesday night.

I'm going to write a seperate post to explain my choice for Man of the Match. But here's a text I received from a mate just after full time which all but sums up my feelings:

Voronin, Riise and Pennant need shooting or selling. Not bothered which. We'll get about 75p for the lot. Plessis was excellent though, a real talent.

Vote for your Man of the Match below.

Vote: Who was Man of Match against Arsenal?

Dirk Kuyt is simply not everyone's cup of tea.

I for one have been particularly vociferous in my criticism of the Dutchman in the past. 'He works hard,' as everyone seems to say. 'Big deal, so would I if I played for Liverpool,' has always been my response.

But one thing you cannot deny is that he never seems fazed by an occasion and, as a result, he can score on the big stage.

Perhaps it is born from his tireless work ethic. In his mind it doesn't matter if he's playing Accrington or Arsenal - if he works as hard as he can then he'll get his reward in the end. Fate has dished them out kindly.

Anyway, last night was one of those occasions and again the Dutchman answered his critics. No, he'll never score 20 goals a season, but he proved his worth last night, and for that reason he is hands down my man of the match.

Yours?

Vote: Who was Man of the Match against Everton?

A bit late in the day we know but we don't want a big Everton-shaped hole in the Liverpool Pies archive now do we?

Plus it's only fair that Martin Skrtel and Sami Hyypia get lavished with some well-deserved praise.

For me, the votes have to go to the Slovakian. Hyypia perhaps executed the best challenge in dispossessing Yakubu, but Skrtel was immense. Time and again he seemingly came from nowhere to swipe the ball off a blue nose and set the red men on their merry way once more.

Fernando Torres was excellent while Dirk Kuyt was as tireless as ever. The Dutchman fully-deserved the applause that met his 92nd-minute lung-busting chasing down of Tim Howard.

Steven Gerrard was back to normal after a poor showing against Manchester United, and Xabi Alonso was far more effective too. Lucas also had a tough task in deputising for Javier Mascherano but to the Brazilian's credit he handled the big occasion well.

Who would YOU say was top dog though?

Vote: Who was Man of the Match against Manchester United?

To be honest I'm not sure I know the answer to this one.

Who was Liverpool's best player against Manchester United?

A process of elimination rules out Pepe Reina - despite a series of goods saves his two mistakes cannot be forgiven - Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard and Javier Mascherano.

Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel can count themselves out too, while Fernando Torres was ineffective (although he had no service). On the right, Dirk Kuyt was a ghost at times.

That leaves the substitutes, Ryan Babel - who went off after an hour - Alvaro Arbeloa, and the man I would give it to, Fabio Aurelio.

The Brazilian may not have ran the wings all afternoon long and he may not have whipped in cross after cross, but he did as good a job on Cristiano Ronaldo as could have been expected. True, the Portguese winger got his goal in the end but that had nothing to do with Aurelio.

Vote result: Liverpool's all-time greatest Irishman is J...

...ohn Aldridge.

To mark St Patrick's Day we asked you to vote for Liverpool's all-time greatest Irishman and we can announce today that Aldo topped the pile.

The striker, who scored an incredible 63 goals in 104 games for the Reds - including one against Everton in the 1989 FA Cup final - received 26 per cent of the votes cast.

Second in the poll, with 23 per cent, was current right back Steve Finnan - some achievement for a lad who started his career at Welling United. Finnan, who retired from international football in January, has made over 200 appearances the Reds since joining from Fulham in a £4.9million deal in the summer of 2003. His greatest achievement has undoubtedly been helping the club win a fifth European Cup in 2005.

The final podium place went to 1989 FA Cup-winning captain Ronnie Whelan. There have been few servants as loyal as Whelan, who made 443 appearances for the club between 1979 and 1994. The midfield maestro helped the club to an astonishing 18 honours during that time and deservedly took 17 per cent of the vote.
